Sharing Faith through Fellowship and Worship

Job Description for Organist and Director of Music

St Mary's is a relatively small church with a sizeable congregation, a rich musical history and a “wonderfully friendly community feel”. The choir is small but balanced (SATB) and robed. It was described by a visiting organist as “small, ambitious and very accomplished” but we would like to grow and to encourage children in the congregation.

We have a large repertoire and recent additions to it include works by Rutter, Tavener, Ireland, and Will Todd. There is a large and organised music library.

The hymn book used is New Ancient and Modern.  There are several settings of the Mass.

We have a very supportive Rector and congregation

The organ and piano

The organ was built by JW Walker in 1872; the tracker action remains. It has two manuals and pedals; five stops on the Swell Organ, seven on the Great Organ the three on the Pedal organ. There are three couplers.

We have a modern upright piano and make good use of it in rehearsals and services.
